Introduction

Assabil, the Friends of Public Libraries, was established in 1997. Its first priority was to endow Beirut with a public library. In order to ensure that this and future public libraries become a permanent part of the Lebanese landscape, we approached the Municipality of Beirut and asked them to join with us to establish public libraries in Beirut. We believe that this public-private collaboration is essential to the future of public libraries in Lebanon.
